Best of all the breakfast spots in west portal. Not as trendy looking as Toast, but taste wise it's way better. Also less expensive than squat and gobble.

Oh my god! I ordered a "California whatever" and the piece of cheese looked like it was so small that I literally laughed out loud! The meat looked like bologni instead of "turkey" and the french fries looked frozen. I told the horrible waitress that I wanted to return it. I said I could not eat it. She said "You have to pay for it." I said "I did not touch it", why?" She then picked up her phone and said she was calling the police. Maybe I should call the police. I just got ripped off for a sandwich I did not eat! That sandwich was a joke. And I have eaten all over the United States because of my work in music. Folks this place has gone down hill more and more. They do not serve quality food. And they do not understand the concept of service. And they ripped me off. My advice. Don't give them your business. Stay away!

Ended up at Cafe Rain Tree on Sunday morning around 11:30am after I realized that Squat and Gobble down the street was an order-at-the-counter type establishment which I was not looking for after being thoroughly underimpressed by Crepevine the previous day. There aren't too many brunch places in the West Portal area and Cafe Rain Tree actually didn't come up when searching on Yelp for "Brunch" around West Portal, but walking down the street we passed by here and I'm really glad we did.
I got the Country Scramble for $12.50, which is super hearty and comes with sausage, bacon ham as well as home fries/hash browns and toast. It wasn't anything mind-blowing but it filled me up and I was satisfied. In any case, I definitely think that Cafe Rain Tree deserves better than a 3-star establishment rating. The service was wonderful here, and even though the fare isn't anything more than your typical standard American breakfast, not everything has to be new/fancy/fusion ok lmao.
Come here for a good solid breakfast/brunch in a cute, undertrafficked and in my personal opinion underappreciated neighborhood! -

Came here on a Saturday for brunch. Super friendly. They have cozy seats and a bar section. Not much space for a big group, but I did see them for a group if 5 in the corner by the window. I got the breakfast combo which had 2 pancakes,2 susage or bacon, and eggs. Which was about 10.95 for the weekend and 9.95 for the weekday. Not a bad price. Fluffy pancakes.
You can choose between blueberry pancake, banana pancake of French toast.
